They called a cut a raise

On Saturday, Anthropic’s developer account posted a tweet that sounds like good news. From 14 September, the standard weekly limit on Claude Code goes up 25% for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise. Until then, the temporary 50% extra stays.

The second tweet in the thread, the one you have to scroll for, says something else: versus today, that’s 17% less.

Two weeks ago I cancelled Claude Max. Not because of the model. Because the contract moves on its own. This is the same move, with arithmetic.

The sums #

If the old quota was 100:

• May extra (+50%): 150. That’s what you have now.
• From 14 September (base +25%): 125.

125 is more than 100. And it is less than 150. The headline sells the first. Whoever pays lives the second.

The 50% extra wasn’t a rumour. They put it in in May, extended it, extended it again. Three months of treating it as the floor. Now they pull it and call the new floor a permanent raise.

It isn’t illegal. It’s a press release.

They had to spell it out #

The first tweet didn’t carry the −17%. That came later, once the thread was already «we’re raising your cap». Community Notes sat on top of the original: the base goes up 25%; versus what you have now, it goes down. They confirm it themselves in the same thread.

Four and a half million views isn’t a Twitter misunderstanding. It’s people reading the headline and then the small print.

In the same thread they promise «changes that will make it feel like you’re getting more from Claude». Said on the day you cut 17%, the word that doesn’t belong is feel.

It isn’t the cap. It’s the floor #

I’m not writing this because my Claude Code week ran out. I’m not in there any more. On 16 August I left over the watermark: a layer I didn’t ask for and can’t turn off. The cap is another layer. You don’t see it in the sampling. You see it in the announcement.

The product you buy isn’t a number. It’s the latest tweet. Today 150. In two weeks 125. And «permanent», until next Saturday.

There’s a lawsuit in California because Max 20× doesn’t quite land at 20×. People say the model stops at 90% «just in case». It fits. When the limit is a mystery, the mystery is the product.

I’m not ranking models. Claude still writes code very well. Codex, that same weekend, went the other way: resets, more headroom. Doesn’t matter. Whoever pays a flat fee isn’t buying a model. They’re buying a floor. If the floor is an X thread, there is no floor.

Cancelling wasn’t an identity. It was a line. This is the same one.
